Herbs and the Year of the Horse

Welcome to the Year of the Fire Horse!

Which has come galloping in and brought some relief for our rain drenched country. Spare a thought for the damp burghers of Cardinham, Cornwall, which has experienced 50 consecutive days of rain since 30 December 2025, according to the Met Office…

As the days begin to draw out and the weather becomes slightly less wet and cold our thoughts start to turn to the warmer months ahead. While for most of us this brings relief and cheer, for others who might have seasonal allergies (e.g. hay fever) it may not. Trees, grasses and moulds can take sensitives from the first blooms of spring to the falling of the leaves, with little respite between.

We have been using our Herbs Are Good Immune tonic for a number of years and it is based on a Chinese formula from 1213 called Jade wind screen. This elegant combination of 5 herbs boosts the immune system… which if one is in the habit of reacting to allergens is precisely what is needed.

In the original text it states that the beneficial effects of this formula take about 6-8 weeks to really manifest fully.

Plan what is difficult while it is still easy

You can see where this is going…. if your allergy season starts in say April, now is the time to start to do something about it rather than waiting till then and wondering why, yet again, for another year, you are experiencing symptoms that make your life more difficult than it has to be.

Ben and Biao – Root and Branch

In Traditional Chinese Medicine there is the concept of the “Root” and “Branch” of a condition… taking the immune tonic before symptoms manifest is treating the “Root” of the problem. While ideally this means that the “Branch” therefore doesn’t manifest, in reality it may do, albeit less – less intense, less frequent, and less distressing…

For the “Branch” i.e.  – stiff neck, sneezing, runny nose, itchy sore eyes, scratchy throat, wheezing etc we have a handy pill called Bi yan pianwhich meets most of these symptoms. Of course, if these steps do not bring the relief you were hoping for, coming for an appointment is a good idea. The reason for this is that feeling your pulse and seeing you in person contributes to a more accurate diagnosis and thus superior treatment. Acupuncture is also very useful for allergies, especially when combined with the herbs and sensible diet, exercise and abdominal breathing.

Our recommendation is therefore to get the immune tonic – either the generic one – which is good, or if you have specific areas that are more reactive than others – e.g eyes, or nasal symptoms…then please get in touch, let us know what is worst for you, and we can produce a bespoke bottle to match. If you are still not feeling as well as you would like, then come for an appointment.

Pay for “5 get 6” offer is still available after the initial consultation, as is the £10 referral reduction on the treatment fee for you and for the person you refer.

On the subject of medicines….

We are delighted to say that we now have an alcohol licence which means we will soon be making our own tinctures from fresh herbs wild crafted by us from the Suffolk countryside, as well as herbs sourced from farther afield. Due to oncosts the price of all medicines is increasing by £1 with immediate effect.

We wish you a happy and successful year of the horse and if we can be of any assistance please do contact us.

All the best,

Steve and the team at Herbs are good.
